Consumer credit - how do you know when you have too much? Is it dangerous? Are there issues? What can be done about it?
The first, and foremost, thing that needs to be done when you believe that you have too much consumer credit is to examine what you really have - and what you need. In a typical month, more than likely there won't be any need for the 'just in case' slush fund that you have established for yourself. However, when an emergency strikes - and you find yourself reaching for that credit card - it is much better to know what you are getting into, and how far you can / should go, before ever using that plastic. Or credit line, or taking a 2nd mortgage, etc.
A good rule of thumb for anybody considering actually using their credit lines or credit cards is to pay attention to what you are using it for - is it convenience? Are you just staving off the inevitable, and using the plastic until it (and you) are broke under a pile of debt so big you can't climb out in the end?

Or, are you using your credit in a real emergency - say you lose your job, have some unexpected medical expenses, or get into an accident with your car - these things happen, and are exactly the reason you got that credit in the first place.
If that sounds like you, that is great! So many people in the States today don't have a good grip on their consumer credit, and need a little push (sometimes a shove) in the right direction to get started on the road to making their credit better - and using it more responsibly.
In the event that you need help managing your bills, or have abused your credit and have some difficulty paying the bills now, for whatever reason, you should ask for help. Fill in this simple form, and you can get help - credit counseling could be the answer you've been looking for.
